4th of July: Finding a different kind of freedom đşđ¸
A reminder that sometimes the only thing standing between you and change is the permission youâre still waiting for.

Tomorrow is Independence Day here in the United States. Across the country, there will be cookouts, fireworks, parades, and probably at least one neighbor setting something off at midnight that absolutely did not come from the legal fireworks section of the store.
But no matter where you’re reading this from in the world, I’ve been thinking a lot about one specific word this week: Freedom.
I’m not talking about political freedom, or the kind of freedom we’re all used to debating on social media. I’m talking about the quiet, personal kind. The freedom to change your mind, to start over, and to admit that something just isn’t working anymore. It’s the freedom to become someone entirely different from the person you’ve been for the last five, ten, or twenty years.
Here’s what I’ve realized recently: Some of the cages we live in don’t have locks. They have routines. We wake up, do what we’ve always done, and tell ourselves the same old stories: This is just who I am. I’m too old to start over. I already tried that. People won’t understand. Maybe next month... next year... tomorrow. Slowly, without even realizing it, we build walls around our own lives.
I know this because I’ve done it. There were years when I accepted things about my health, my career, and honestly, myself, because I thought that was simply the life I had built. Changing it felt too hard, starting over felt terrifying, and waiting just felt easier, until it wasn’t.
Nobody is Sending a Permission Slip
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while rebuilding my life is that nobody shows up with a permission slip. Nobody is going to knock on your door and say, “John, you’re officially allowed to become healthier now.” Nobody is sending you an email saying you’re finally qualified to try something new, and there isn’t a ceremony when you’re allowed to let go of the version of yourself that no longer fits. At some point, you just have to decide.
Now, that doesn’t mean everything changes overnight. You know me better than that by now! Living95 has never been about flipping your entire life upside down on Monday morning and becoming a completely different person by Friday.
It’s always been about the small decisions:
The walk you almost skipped.
The conversation you’ve been avoiding.
The idea sitting in your notes app.
The boundary you know you need to set.
The camera you’ve been afraid to turn on.
The thing you’ve been telling yourself you’ll do “someday.”
Sometimes, true freedom starts with just one small decision to stop asking for permission.
What Does Freedom Look Like For You?
So, as my friends here in the U.S. celebrate Independence Day this weekend, I want to ask everyone reading this: What would a little more freedom look like in your life?
I'm not talking about unlimited money, quitting your job tomorrow, or running away from your responsibilities. Just a little more freedom. Freedom from one bad habit. One expectation. One fear. Or just one story you’ve been telling yourself for too long.
You don’t have to fix everything this weekend. Just notice the cage, then look closely at the door. You might just realize it was never locked.
Stay healthy, stay balanced, and keep driving forward,
John
